Our Journeys: From Engineering and Science to Sustainable Living
Keene’s passion for energy efficiency began at age 10 when he learned that generators were motors running in reverse, and excited that regenerative braking was already a thing before the turn of the millennium thanks to the first-generation hybrid Toyota Prius. In his career, he has seen firsthand how organisations in the UK save millions in energy bills just by turning down the lights by an almost imperceptible 5-10% during peak demand. He thought, “Surely households can benefit from smart energy management too.”
Keene holds a degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Melbourne and a Master’s in Medical Robotics from Imperial College London. Currently working as a software engineer, he’s a self-professed energy efficient geek who spends considerable time researching electric vehicles and ways to make homes more energy efficient. His all-time favourite cheap energy-saving hack: Bubble wrap on windows in winter and aluminium foil on windows in summer.
Hannah’s interest in energy efficiency started when she began dating Keene and hybrid vehicles dominated their conversations. It became personal when we lived in a cold, mouldy London maisonette where water dripped from the ceiling as she was feeding our baby, and black mould grew on the walls. She thought, “Surely there’s a better way of building homes.”
Hannah holds a Laboratory Medicine degree from RMIT University Melbourne and a PhD in Cancer Science from University College London. She worked on drug discovery for breast cancer at the Institute of Cancer Research before stepping away from science to care for young children.
From London to Australian Dreams: Building Our Energy-Efficient Dreams
We moved back to Australia in 2023. Our shared passion for energy efficiency has led us to visit passive houses, high-performance homes, and hybrid homes, dreaming of the day we can build one for our own family. We enjoy learning about different ways builders and architects solve problems that homeowners face.

We know firsthand the stress and frustration of hiring tradies — from no-shows to excuses. In preparing to build our own home, we’ve spoken with architects, builders, and installers, and we realised homeowners need a single place to find trustworthy professionals.
That’s why we launched Energy Efficient Everything, an independent energy directory created by founders who are homeowners themselves. Soon, we’ll be sourcing solar and battery installers, and replacing our plug-in hybrid with a full electric vehicle — experiences we’ll continue to share through this platform.
